History

Constructed in 1903 at the southeastern corner of Gramercy Park, the Hotel Irving joined a unique enclave of elegant buildings and townhouses surrounding Manhattan’s only private park. In that era, the hotel offered “parlor and bedroom suites with a private bathroom” and meals in the restaurant for $30 per week. The building converted to a cooperative in 1986, and apartment 4A is the combination of a park-facing suite and the adjacent chaperone’s room. The current owners modernized and renovated the apartment ten years ago, drawing inspiration from architect Diana Vinoly.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is globally recognized and evokes the creativity, history, elegance, and wealth of New York. The location continues to stand firm in any argument about which is the best. Everything you want is here starting with an oasis of calm in the middle of Manhattan. Nearby Union Square has an unrivaled farmers’ market, transportation, and regular excitement from the city and seasons. Restaurants like Maialino, Casa Mono & Bar Jamon, and Gramercy Tavern are exceptional and as busy as ever. Cherished neighborhood institutions include local café, 71 Irving, sushi restaurant, Choshi, and historic pub, Pete’s Tavern. High-minded culture is on the park at the National Arts Club, and the trendy Rose Room at the Gramercy Park Hotel is still buzzing on the north side of the park. Small shops are nearby on the side streets, and major commercial corridors such as 3rd Avenue, Broadway, and Park Avenue South, have everything else.

All owners of 26 Gramercy Park South are able to join the exclusive association with private keys to the park. The building has a part-time attended lobby and superintendent. There is a central laundry, bike room, and flexible sublet policy. Pets and pied-a-terres are welcome.
